Hidden in the countryside of southern Kyushu is a historical site far more important than its tiny marker on the map would suggest. This quiet plot of land is actually one of the forgotten birthplaces of Zen Buddhism in Japan, where the Doryu-ji Temple was established around 800 years ago.

Driving back from a visit to the Uchinoura Space Center, I stumbled upon this easy-to-miss hidden gem, tucked away behind a patch of small rice fields off Route 561, between Kimotsuki and Uchinoura in Kagoshima Prefecture.

The ruins themselves are completely invisible from the road, well hidden inside a dense forest at the end of a short five-minute path cutting past the paddies. I arrived there late in the afternoon, just as the day was beginning to fade, giving the entire scene a darker, deeply serene tone that perfectly matched the tragic history of the place. That moody atmosphere directly inspired the color profile and editing style I chose for these photos. Standing there, you have to imagine that each weathered stone you see represents a monk or warrior who lived, meditated, and walked these grounds hundreds of years ago. Through these images, I tried to convey the genuinely special, haunting feeling of being entirely alone in such a mythical space.

I invite you to read through the brief history below to get a better sense of the profound significance behind these old, moss-covered stones. If you ever find yourself in this corner of Kyushu and appreciate history, solitude, and ancient mysteries, it is absolutely worth the detour.

I hope you enjoy the pictures !!!

From the legend orgin to the brutal end (1200s–1860)

Local legend tells us that the great Chinese Zen master Lanxi Daolong made landfall right here on the shores of Uchinoura Bay in 1246, long before he traveled north to build world-famous monasteries for the Shogun. As the temple grew, it became the proud spiritual home and final resting place for the Kimotsuki clan—the powerful samurai lords who ruled these mountains from their nearby fortress. The oldest, most heavily weathered five-ringed stone towers (Gorintō) you see in the gallery belong to these medieval warriors. For centuries, they protected these woods, turning Doryu-ji into a wealthy center of literacy and high culture. Even when the brutal warring states period later tore Kyushu apart, Doryu-ji remained an untouchable, sacred sanctuary. Remarkably, some of the standing stones actually belong to the rival Shimazu clan—the bitter, mortal enemies of the Kimotsuki.

When peace finally settled over Japan during the Edo period, the temple evolved into a scenic, deeply respected mountain monastery celebrated for its vibrant autumn maples. The beautifully preserved, six-sided Roku-Jizō stone tower stands as a silent witness to those final centuries of absolute quiet, when monks spent their entire lives listening to nothing but the wind through the trees and the running water of the nearby stream.

The tragic turning point of the story explains the dark, heavy mood of the landscape today. In the late 1860s, a radical political movement swept the region, ordering the total eradication of Buddhism to make way for State Shinto. In a matter of years, over six centuries of sacred wooden architecture were completely leveled, the monks were cast out, and the land was aggressively plowed into the very rice fields you walk past to get here.

The Restitution

What makes this place a true mystery is that these stones are standing at all. But the neat, dignified rows of monuments you see in my images do not look the way the purgers left them; they are the result of decades of quiet, painstaking work by local volunteers who literally dug these fragments out of the mud and brush. By reassembling them stone by stone, they restored a voice to the ancient monks, ensuring that anyone who takes the detour down Route 561 can still feel the weight of their memory.
